Semi-Automatic Bandsaws
Semi-automatic metal bandsaws make regular cutting of tubes, sections, bars and structural components easier. Depending on the equipment fitted, a semi-automatic bandsaw handles selected stages of the cutting cycle, such as controlling the movement of the saw bow and the vice clamping mechanism, reducing the number of tasks performed manually.
These machines are suitable for fabrication workshops, toolrooms and manufacturing facilities handling individual jobs as well as small and medium-sized batches. The CORMAK range includes bandsaws with different cutting capacities, blade speed adjustment methods and machine designs, including dual-column models. Compare angled cutting capabilities, workpiece clamping methods and cutting cycle operation to select the right bandsaw for your workstation.
How does a semi-automatic bandsaw work?
A semi-automatic metal bandsaw combines operator preparation of the workpiece with automation of selected cutting stages. The operator positions the material, sets the required length, selects the cutting parameters and then starts the cycle. Depending on the machine design, the control system operates the vice clamp, lowers the saw bow, completes the cut or raises the bow back to its starting position. Not every bandsaw performs all these operations automatically.
An important distinction: hydraulic feed controls the movement of the saw bow during cutting, whereas semi-automatic operation refers to the sequence of the entire cycle. Without an automatic material feeder, the operator usually advances the workpiece to the next required length. A roller conveyor supporting a heavy section is not the same as a system that automatically measures and feeds material to length.
Key benefits of semi-automatic bandsaws
-
Less manual operation – hydraulic raising and lowering of the saw bow on suitably equipped bandsaws reduces the need to handle successive cutting stages manually.
-
More convenient clamping – a hydraulic vice enables clamping to be controlled without manual tightening each time.
-
Control over cutting parameters – feed adjustment and a suitably selected blade speed make it easier to adapt cutting conditions to the workpiece section and metal grade.
-
Flexibility for structural fabrication – models with a swivelling saw bow allow mitre cuts, although the permitted cutting capacities depend on the angle.
-
Handling larger workpieces – dual-column designs guide the saw bow on two columns and are available for cutting large cross-sections.
These benefits depend on the equipment fitted and are not a standard set of features shared by every bandsaw in the category.
Applications: tubes, sections, bars and steel components
Semi-automatic bandsaws are suitable for fabrication workshops, steel structure manufacturers, toolrooms and maintenance departments. They are used to prepare tubes, hollow sections, angle sections, channels and solid bars for welding, assembly or further machining.
When workpiece cross-sections change frequently, quick vice adjustment and the available blade speed range are important. For long sections, material support and safe handling are essential. For bundle cutting, check whether the particular bandsaw has a suitable clamping device and whether the type of bundle falls within its capabilities.
How to choose a semi-automatic metal bandsaw
Start with the cross-section, not the motor power. Check the maximum diameter of the bar or tube and the permitted width and height of the section. Verify the capacities separately at 90° and at the required cutting angle, as they may differ.
Compare the operating sequence. Establish which tasks are performed by the control system, whether the vice is hydraulic, how the saw bow lifting height is adjusted and whether the material must be positioned manually for the next cut.
Check blade speed and feed. Blade speed is expressed in m/min and describes the movement of the cutting blade, not the rate at which the saw bow descends. Select the available speed settings or variable speed control according to the material, blade and recommended cutting conditions. Also consider coolant, available floor space and how long workpieces will be supported.
Examples from the CORMAK range:
-
CORMAK S200RH features hydraulic control of the saw bow and vice, with a cutting angle range from −45° to +60° – a solution for various structural components.
-
CORMAK BS370H has an inverter providing speed adjustment from 20–90 m/min and a top clamping device for bundle cutting.
-
CORMAK H-50/70 uses a dual-column design, a hydraulic vice and blade speeds of 40/60/80 m/min – worth comparing when cutting larger cross-sections.
Gravity-feed, semi-automatic or automatic bandsaw?
A gravity-feed bandsaw uses the weight of the saw bow to provide feed; the remaining operations depend on the machine design.
A semi-automatic bandsaw reduces operator involvement in selected stages of the cutting cycle but, without an automatic material feeder, usually requires manual positioning for the next cut.
An automatic bandsaw fitted with a feeding system can automatically measure and cut successive lengths.
A semi-automatic machine is worth considering for varied workpieces and regular cutting, while an automatic model is better suited to long, repetitive production runs.
Why compare the CORMAK range?
The category includes bandsaws for workshop and industrial applications, including dual-column designs. Product pages allow you to compare equipment, specifications and cutting capacities, as well as check the availability of accessories. CORMAK provides access to sales advisers and information about warranty and post-warranty servicing.
Compare semi-automatic bandsaws and select a configuration suited to your workpiece sizes, cutting volume and workflow.
